Currently Watching: Tenchi OAV

Okay well yesterday I did watch and screencap the Macross: Do You Remember Love? movie but since my tax return came in I've been investing in a few things one of them being the Tenchi OAV series. I don't mean the 3rd OAV from Funimation but the orignal OAV series released by Pioneer/Geneon. This is not the "signature series" release but the often hard to find shiny grey box version. I found a seller on Amazon who was willing to sell this used for a hefty but still reasonable price (hint: less than a Nintendo Wii). Keep in mind I do own the OAVs on VHS but given the fact that I upgraded the TV series, OAV Specials, Pretty Sammy series, movies, and new OAV to DVD this was the only glaring inconsistency in my collection. I was so insistent to get THIS version because of superior video quality and the Tenchi Encyclopedia disc (of course I know probably a few months later Funimation is going to FINALLY license rescue this show. They just did it with Trigun).

But since I got it used I'm checking the discs to make sure everything is kosher. I am impressed though because I ordered this on Amazon on Thursday and I have it now on Saturday night. The boxset is in near meant condition and looks no worse for wear than many of the DVDs in my own collection.

I'm not going to bother with a review since my bud, Astronerdboy, has covered this on his own website. He's also doing the newest Tenchi animation.

  1. Ah, go ahead and do it. ^_^ Which reminds me, I still have to do OVA 2. ^_^;;;

    BTW, you don't have to say what you paid, but I remember buying this brand new for over $100 years ago. I bought the 4-disc singles Pioneer released later because they fixed the most egregious translation problems.

  2. Are we talking about the whole "grandma" vs. "mother" thing? Y'know, I specifically waited for that scene and switched to the Japanese version and to be honest its hard to hear if little Tenchi is saying "Oka-chan" or "Oba-chan" so I can see how the error was made. Because this set is out of print the price always seems to fluctuate from seller to seller but I think I paid a decent price for it. My main reasoning being I heard this set had superior video quality and the 3rd disc of encyclopedia details.

    Still, all the discs worked perfectly and I'm satisfied.

  3. Sorry...didn't catch your reply (I didn't select the right option for that).

    Anyway, Pioneer corrected the "grandma" problem in their 10th anniversary 4-disc release of the series. They corrected a lot of other errors as well, but as my own Japanese skills slowly grow, I see how the translation/adaptation added little stuff to the script.

    BTW, I'm almost finished watching OVA 2, so I hope to actually write something in a week or so and have it posted after that.
